Cartoonist and founder of Visual Thinkery
Bryan is a curious listener who draws. He tunes in to different voices to create meaningful artwork, engaging others to explore ideas, concepts and messages. He’s helped many organisations to articulate identity and communications around education, openness, technology and environmental crisis. The digital artwork Bryan creates can be seen in campaigns, book covers, open textbooks, animations and all of it is rooted in open conversation. His clients include Creative Commons, Open University, Royal Society of Chemistry, Greenpeace, Changing Markets, and Friends of the Earth.
Bryan’s first career was in Software Engineering and he has co-founded, led and grown a number of tech-related startups, as well as a social enterprise aimed at encouraging creative young people. He is also a co-founder of the We Are Open co-operative.
Bryan has run a number of different visual storytelling workshops, both online and offline for organisations such as Open University, University of Göttingen and UFI.
Bryan believes that everyone has insight worth sharing. His allies include curiosity, humour and experimentation. He’s a defender of the Creative Commons, and builds tools like the Remixer Machine which encourages others to create, remix and share.
Over the two years, Bryan has been creating A Patchwork Province – a series of small press zines about Ulster. They visually explore his evolving Irish identity as an Ulster-born Protestant – learning to speak Gaeilge and discovering disremembered histories.
