Bryan Mathers Speaking profile

First I listen.
Then I draw my listen.

Hello! I’m Bryan Mathers, and listening is my superpower. I love to tune into what people are saying, and to capture and translate it visually. What are you trying to say? To whom are you trying to say it? Dialogue provides the viewpoints to explore what it looks like from multiple angles.

I’m the founder of Visual Thinkery, a wee studio that turns conversation into hand-drawn cartoons and explainer illustrations. I work with campaigns, funders, NGOs and educators — people trying to explain something complicated to people who need to get it. I grew up in Ulster, I think with a pen in my hand, and I believe most strategy documents would be improved by being a drawing instead.

People tell stories, stories paint pictures

I spoke at TEDxGalway about listening, stories and drawing.

Curious how the work actually gets made?

Other things I make

Morpho - The Remixer Machine

The Remixer Machine ↗

Remix visual thinkery into badges, posters and provocations of your own. I’ve been amazed at how people have used it — for conferences, digital badges and presentations.

Ulster says maybe - Zine

Small Press Zines ↗

Unpicking my Ulster roots in visual stories — and just like me, they’re a little curious. Zines are succinct, punchy, and land in the hand of adults and kids alike.

Cartoon: ‘I just want my data to mean something’, from Visual Thinkery Stories & Cartoons

Visual Thinkery Stories & Cartoons ↗

This site contains a wealth of visual thinkery I’ve created over the years – some of which you can use freely under a Creative Common licence.

Teaser cartoon for ‘Greetings from your trauma’, a personal story about living with Alopecia

This is where my darkness lies ↗

I’ve also used the Visual Thinkery process on myself – to sit with the trauma caused by having Alopecia since I was a kid.
